keep bringin' them radio hits! there's room in this thread for a carson daily too. :2T:

i'd wanted to share more J. Cole (he's coming up) on this thread, because Friday Night Lights is great. i'm just waiting for him to do something on par with it.

also, just to make you guys aware of the white girl mob (V-nasty, kreyshawn, lil debbie etc - bay area shit). biggest thing they've done yet (krey made a mill off a deal from the track):

^i have no idea who those broads are.

the white girl mob thing is kinda blowing up, though. kreyshawn's the better of the bunch cause she's actually talented and is making a lotta dudes' music videos for them now. half the talk around them is @ V-nasty using the n-word though. still, the track i posted is better than most Minaj songs, if only for the beat. it's hipster as fuck, but again, a) that shit's been huge since charles hamilton lupe, and b) it's the bay area, damn near anything outside of E-40 tends to go in that direction, you know?

i dont know if Shadow or RZA did much of DJ Hero 2, but if you like that, you should play the game (its almost cheap enough to come in cereal boxes now) or hear the soundtrack; it's got some of the most fun mash-ups since Girl Talk. they really put together a lotta shit i didn't think would flow well at all.

Northern State had a big hype push back in the mid-oughts--featured in mainstream mags and what-nots. They were heralded as the next Beastie Boys--only w/ vaginas. And they went nowhere fast. Speaking of which, this new crop seems like more of the same only hipster-friendly and more vulgar. Then again, the petite white chick w/ a potty mouth shtick has already been done by Lady Sov.

still, the track i posted is better than most Minaj songs, if only for the beat. it's hipster as fuck, but again, a) that shit's been huge since charles hamilton lupe, and b) it's the bay area, damn near anything outside of E-40 tends to go in that direction, you know?

Well, huge in the hip-hop world maybe, but even in that context it's a subjective and relative term. Minaj is only used by you as a comparison b/c she's achieved success. And she's only done so b/c she's had a crossover appeal w/ singing pop as well. So comparing this hipster chick is a bit like comparing the fat free-styler to Em or Weezy, i.e. there really is no comparison.

I'll wait for the inevitable megaupload/torrent link to check out those DJ Hero mashups.

it ain't hard to find, brah

damn, i was really out of the loop sometime around then. but yeah, minaj could've been the 3rd or 4th person to go platinum last year, wouldn'tve changed that Pink Friday garbage from sounding like straight booty (Iceman, did you hear a different album?). i was kinda let down cause i like female MC's trying out different shit - but like most of the young money camp, her better stuff is on mixtapes and other people's stuff. speaking of your weezy, i havent liked a thing past Tha Carter 2 and his mixtape shit with Da Drought. ditto for Drake, for the most part - i think they might be part of why the new industry model is to go hard on mixtapes, slack/call in all kinds've guests and hope something sticks with the album. there's so many people doing this lately.

and what's with knocking fat MC's? they've traditionally brought quality (this dude's really not bad, ill post up some from his album & his ghostface duo on the new Wu album), and are certainly more interesting than past-his-prime Em with rich white man blues. :troll:

for real though, that last album (before the royce one, which was better) had a whole track bitching about mp3's. might be time for another failed marriage again, marshall

oh yeah, speaking of Shady/Interscope/etc, 50 obviously didn't leak Dre's shit, but apparently was pretty salty cause he can't get his album released. this kinda thing has happened to hip-hop artists for decades now, but for a guy who was on top a little more than 5 years ago, it's crazy to see.

right in time for my weekend! Mick Boogie's the DJ who put out that great summer mixtape last year with DJ Jazzy Jeff, if you're wondering.

SWv2F.jpg

^click to stream or download! mix is bangin. I'm dying to see that tribe documentary, even with q-tip's controversy, shame it's not showing anywhere down here..here's to hoping for a rip online soon enough.

again, Wu is my favorite hip-hop group 4 days a week; the other 3, it's Tribe.

Ya on point, Nick?

This is by far my favorite of the three mixtapes I've DL'd on your recommendation. The Native Tongue was the most recent, and it's OK--I haven't gotten through the whole mix yet though. The other mix was one you recommended earlier this summer (I forget the name), and it was more meh.

Excursions, however, is by far my favorite. Most likely b/c my exposure to TCQ has been minimal. I vaguely remember Q-Tip had a few solo joints and guest spots that had radio play back in the late 90s/early oughts (maybe??) , but I really wasn't ever exposed to the TCQ stuff properly. Thanks for correcting that blind spot in my hip-hop knowledge.

all the time, chris

the Native Tongue one is an eclectic mix, Jungle Brothers and early De La have themes but not necessarily the same sound as Tribe, so i can see that (Latifah was outta nowhere for me). Can't go wrong with Pharcyde though.

i think you're referring to the Clean Ass Whip mixtape, which was mostly west coast/g-funk, which is my favorite of that region's sound (they got some of the Cube era gangsta stuff too, which i adored growing up). glad you tried it, it's very different from the bay area stuff or throwbacks like the Game that a lotta artists there now go for. but yeah, the Tribe mix just goes, almost all my favorite tracks are there - really glad you dug it! can't stress enough that while Low End Theory is often in the top 10 of all time album lists, Midnight Marauders is probably my 2nd favorite hip hop album ever. Grab that one and just let it play, it'll brighten your day.

speaking of older artists, Funkmaster Flex posted Otis remix with Busta Rhymes and the return of DMX...the dog is not back yet, but your mileage might vary.

breaking: Detox might not be a hot mess! Dre dropped the new people & got with Snoop, D.O.C., Warren G. & Kurupt. if Dre brings DJ Quik in on this, it could be amazing (turns out the guy was uncredited on All Eyez on Me and Get Rich or Die Tryin', i had no idea).

meanwhile, Nas just announced his next album with be with Mobb Deep, waiting to see some work & production credits but it could be great.

Thurz - Riot - Black Thought (The Roots) goes in over DJ Khalil, i dug it.

Is it wrong that I not only don't find her Em cover horrible, but I actually like her more for it?

Honestly never gave her much thought before, but she's now somehow way hotter.

Ha! -1! No Taylor Swift in the hip hop thread apparently

Nick. Panch. Guys, did y'all have anything to do w/ this? :uhm:

big-boi-mug-shot.jpg

The Associated Press, Sunday, August 7, 2011, 11:45am (PDT) MIAMI (AP) -- Grammy-winning OutKast rapper Big Boi has been arrested in Miami for possession of drugs including ecstasy and Viagra pills.

The rapper, whose real name is Antwan Patton, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia on Sunday. According to the Miami-Dade County Corrections website, the 36-year-old Patton was also carrying MDMA, which is the main ingredient in Ecstasy.

They just had to include that Viagra in the report. Reporters always kickin' a brutha when he's down.

aw, bullshit. last thing his projects need is another delay, hope this doesn't keep him down.

in other hip-hop news, interesting show coming from the UK:

3Ghl8.jpg

Presented by actor, DJ, MC and lifelong hip hop fan Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther) and featuring stars from both sides of the Atlantic (Snoop Dogg, Mark Ronson, Nas, Rakim, Debbie Harry, Jessie J, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and N Dubz, to name just a few), How Hip Hop Changed the World counts down the defining moments of a culture that exploded out of the wastelands of 1970s New York and went on to become one of the most dominant global economic, political and social forces of our time.

From the birth of turntabalism to the UK grime artists who are now conquering the world, this two-hour special reveals everything you need to know about hip hop.

im honestly trying to find you a WTT link; filetube keeps getting their links taken down or having BS ones put up. id go with torrents or mediafire for now. i think the physical release drops tomorrow or so, so you gotta imagine itunes/co are shutting this shit down with a quickness.

Blackstar (Mos/Talib) - untitled (its only a snippet, but production by Madlib, sounds great so far!).

ps WTT impressions so far: jay's taking it easy, but not bad so far. too much autotoon, even on top of this RZA track (...), but it's got some fun soul samples, along with otis, nina, curtis etc. it's not gonna be the game-changer i think it's being billed as, but it's by no means a bad album so far. 4 tracks in, each has been enjoyable.
